Snowman Half Marathon Recap

SO, this past Saturday I ran the Snowman Half marathon in Mt Pleasant, MI. Now let me tell you about said half..

1. It took me FOREVER to get to Mt Pleasant from Detroit…
I left Detroit at 4:30am coffee & bagel in hand. You’d think that’s a good thing seeing as the race was 2.5 hours away and it didn’t start until 9am.. BUT you’d be thinking wrong. It took me over three hours to get to Mt Pleasant. Not to mention multiple *almost* panic attacks when some idiot with 4-wheel drive decided to pass me causing a white out for me. Let’s just say that I’ve decided that for the next two in the series I’m staying in a hotel the night before.

2. In reference to #1, I got GREAT gas mileage for that tank of gas…
Seriously, they’re not kidding when they say that 55mph is the ‘ideal’ speed to drive for great gas mileage. I will never ever doubt them again.. You know… whoever ‘they’ are.

3. I got to the race sight an hour and 15 minutes before the race…
Usually I’m all about getting to the race early.. but that’s also when I’m racing in the summer and it’s NICE in the morning.. It was just miserable on Saturday.. It was cold, the parking lot had a good 6 inches of snow, and it was windy.. Miserable I tell you.

4. I went to the race alone…
This is the FIRST race that I haven’t at least known someone else there. My mom and/or dad usually come to all of my races, or I’m racing with someone. However, this is the first race where my mom didn’t come, and I wasn’t racing with someone.. My boyfriend offered to come, but I knew I was going to be slow, and let’s face it.. How fun is it to stand around waiting for someone to finish a half when you can only see the start/finish line?! Not to mention that it was like 20* outside!

5. I wore things that I bought the night before…
Ask any seasoned runner and they’ll tell you that this is a HUGE no-no, however, I decided to make the exception. Why? I wanted to wear ‘legging capris’ under my running tights, and I knew that I was going to need something to wear under my wind-breaker that would help with keeping me warm. SO, I bought new (on sale!) legging capris and a long sleeve, athletic, turtle neck. Let me just say that I was VERY happy with the results. I was warm the whole time.

I NEED THESE!!

I NEED THESE!!

6. Ok, MOST of me was warm the whole time…
I wore two pairs of gloves (cheap $1 pair under my Nike running gloves) and it still took my hands about two miles to warm up.. Then again at mile 8 they got cold again.. Though the second time I was SURE that I was going to get frost-bite.. Ever been running in the cold for 8+ miles?! Sometimes irrational thoughts happen.

7. Miles 4-9 consisted of a solid sheet of ice covered by .5-7 inches of snow…
You think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. If I had my Garmin data uploaded I’m sure that I’d see that those miles were pretty close to a 12 mile pace.. I wasn’t about to kill myself so I SLLOOOOWWWEDDD down!

8. I didn’t look at my Garmin once…
You think I’m lying again, don’t you?! Well I kid you not, I really didn’t look at my Garmin. Probably for a few reasons. A) I told myself that I wasn’t going to. B) It was darn cold and I didn’t want to expose my wrists. C) I didn’t want to see how badly my pace was. I was going to “run a half” not “pr a half” or even “race a half” so by keeping my mind elsewhere, I wasn’t tempted to speed up.

9. I was less than prepared to run a half…
Since ending my running streak, I’d pretty much taken a break from running. My body needed it and I welcomed it. HOWEVER, that meant that I wasn’t as prepared for the half as I wished I was. I suppose this goes with why I was just “running a half” versus racing it. Also why I didn’t look at my Garmin, I knew that I needed to take it easy if I wanted to finish without injury.

10. I FINISHED!
It was rough. All of my clothes were drenched like I’d just walked out of the shower. Yaktrax for 13.1 miles isn’t fun. Long drive for 13.1 miles. January is spelled “Janauary” on our sweatshirts. Post-race Big Apple Bagel was AMAZING (yes, two bagels in one day!). It was ugly, but I got it done.

All-in-all, the race was ok. Yea, just ok. The next race in the series is February 15th, so I’m planning on making a weekend out of it. Just so happens that The Price Is Right is at the casino up there that weekend. I’ll just say that it’s NOT worth the drive from Detroit to do the series again. So after this year, I’ll let the locals do it!

  1. I was considering this one only because my has lived in Mt P for the last 5 years or so.. but then she moved to Lansing so I had no excuse to venture out there. 😉 Plus all the other awful reasons why it seemed like a bad idea to drive out there in the bitter cold January just for a race.. hehe.

Seems like a good experience anyway for a number of reasons!

I haven’t run since the Turkey Trot.. the whole ice/snow thing freaks me out a little..
